Blues Drummers
Here are the names and the links I could find of some
of my favorite drummers that were the real blues musicians from
yester-year, and the ones shaping blues music today.
Fred Below
One of the most influential drummers
in blues, working with many of the greatest blues artists of
all time.
Marty Binder
Marty has played blues in Chicago
and abroad with some of the best! He has played blues with Deborah
Coleman, James Wheeler, Coco Montoya, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy,
and Eric Clapton.
Most notably was the drummer for
the Lonnie Brooks band. Patrick has his own recording studio,
and performs with his own band as well.
Duke Blues
Long time drummer for KoKo Taylor
Probably the most knowledgeable
drummer about blues drummers. Also the host of "Blues Before
Sunrise", my favorite radio show when I ride home from my
gigs!
Dave Jefferson
From the "old school",
a master blues and R&B musician playing now with Willie
Kent and the Gents. Dave also has worked
with Buddy Guy, Albert King, B.B. King and Liz Mandville
Greeson.
You can catch Willie playing with
numerous blues bands around Chicago. One of the best blues drummers
still swingin' wood, and a great vocalist too! Some of the many
legendary Blues Artists he's played for include: Jodie Williams,
Luther Allison, Buddy Guy, Mighty Joe Young, Albert King, Koko
Taylor, Junior Wells, B.B. King, Magic Sam, and Big Twist.
One of my favorite drummers, this
guy has unbelievable blues chops. Check out his playing on the
Buddy Guy album "Damn Right I Have the Blues".
Doing more singing these days. Casey
has played drums for many blues icons including Albert Collins
and Johnny Winter.
An original, and an influence on
every blues drummer today. Sam now is playing guitar and singing
mostly.
Drummer of the great Stevie Ray
Vaughan band, Double Trouble.
Odie Payne, Jr.
Another one of the great Chicago
drummers having drummed for: Elmore James, Tampa Red, Muddy Waters,
Otis Rush, Junior Wells, Magic Sam, Sonny Boy Williamson, and
Eddie Taylor.
Played with the blues greats, Howlin
Wolf, Jimmy Reed and John Lee Hooker. A keystone drummer that
every aspiring blues musician needs to listen to!
Willie has played with the blues
best, including Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, and Junior Wells. His
son, Kenny Smith is also kickin' some too!
Twist has drummed for many of the
"who's who" of blues. Twist also writes and has his
own recording studio.
Wright performed with many greats,
including Magic Sam, Bo Diddley, Brewer Phillips, and Eddie C.
Campbell. His simple, disciplined drumming style was rare, and
his double shuffle was classic Chicago blues. An inspiration
for drummers to be dedicated to the song, and play for the music.
Pick up "Hopes & Dreams" Eddie
C. Campbell for a real lesson from
"Huck" on playing a groove without any clutter
